Description of Position:Description of Position: The CLC Horticulture program offers four degree options and four certificate options. Programs in landscape design, landscape construction, floriculture and natural areas management provide multiple learning opportunities for students. Students are primarily seeking career preparation as the outcome of their CLC education, although some are preparing for transfer or taking courses as electives. The Horticulture building houses two greenhouses, a science lab, a floral design classroom, as well as a general classroom and offices. A full-time horticulturist assists in the operation of the greenhouses and preparation of materials. A review of the program mission is in progress and the successful applicant will have experience in or understanding of program development and the ability to establish effective partnerships with local employers and industry representatives.
Responsibilities of this position include chairing the Horticulture program, overseeing the Horticulture building and greenhouses, and teaching horticulture courses. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, academic advisement, curriculum development, recruitment and retention, and serving on college committees.
Qualifications Required: * Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture or closely related field. * Master’s degree or a willingness to complete a Master’s degree prior to award of tenure status. * Experience in and understanding of horticulture as a career field, including knowledge of employment trends and opportunities.
Qualifications Desired: * Master’s degree in Horticulture or closely related field. * Teaching experience, preferably in higher education; graduate coursework and/or teaching in horticulture.
Conditions of Employment: This is a full-time, tenure-track faculty position. Salary placement is commensurate with education and experience. The minimum 2008-2009 nine-month base salary ranges from $43,354 with a master’s degree to $56,394 with a doctorate in the subject field. Because health insurance participation is mandatory for new faculty and health insurance premiums are deducted from the base salary, each new faculty member receives a flexible compensation allowance of $5,700 per academic year in addition to the base salary. This amount is intended to defray the cost of single medical insurance coverage. Optional contract for the summer session offers potential for significantly greater earnings. Faculty may be assigned to campuses other than Grayslake.
The College: The College of Lake County is a progressive two-year community college located in a growing metropolitan area in northeastern Illinois, midway between Chicago and Milwaukee, with a student enrollment of 16,000. Dedicated to excellence in teaching and learning, the College provides access to higher education, supports outreach to the community, and ensures accountability and continuous improvement. The College is committed to responding to the needs of its diverse community. The College offers both day and evening courses at the Grayslake Campus, the Lakeshore Campus, the Southlake Campus, and other locations within the county. Various formats, including online courses, are also offered. Faculty are critical to the active governance structure at the College and opportunities to engage in activities outside the classroom are important to the professional development of individuals and the institution.
