Ag teacher and FFA Adviser Ryan Casteel-Wildman reminisced when she first started teaching at Tuscola High School six years ago, there were very few of her students who chose to pursue ag careers.
Undaunted, Wildman, who grew up on a livestock and grain farm in Lovington, continued to rally around the students and build her newly created ag program that she had started from the ground up. After a few years, she noticed students had started listing ag-related careers on their graduation surveys. “It is so exciting,” said Wildman“There are rewards that go along with teaching, but when you have students who choose a career for life because you helped them, that is exciting.” Wildman now knows how her former ag teacher and FFA Adviser Don Lockwood feels when he proudly talks of his students who followed in his footsteps as educators or selected ag-related careers. Wildman will have a second opportunity to help a school district create a new ag program as she was recently hired as the new Mattoon ag teacher and FFA adviser. She will begin her career in Mattoon this fall. “A new program like the one Mattoon is starting, will need an enthusiastic and motivational leader to build the program from the ground up,” said Lockwood who teaches ag at Sullivan High School. “Ryan is the perfect person for the job. What she has been able to accomplish at Tuscola is amazing. She started from scratch and in the six years that she has been there, she has built an agriculture program that is well respected at the local, state and even national level.”
